During Menes' time, the Egyptian army launched raids against Nubia in the south and expanded his sphere of influence as far as the 1st cataract.He was the 1st king of the 1st dynasty.The 1st dynasty consisted of 8 kings and a queen. Archeologists are unsure what to call him, Narmer or Aha, the 1st 2 rulers of the 1st dynasty. Otherwise Narmer would be the last ruler of Dynasty0.

Menes was said to be the inventor of hieroglyphic writing.Narmer's claim rests largly on his earlier historical position and on the Narmer Palette.On the front of the palette, just under the king's name is a scene depicting Narmar wearing the Red Crown of Lower Egypt.He has a mace in left hand and a type of flail in his right.

Most of the back side of the pallette is taken up by a central scene finely carved with highly detailed raised relief.It shows Narmer in the classical pose found throught Egyptian history of smiting his foes with a mace.

Menes died at age 63,from an attack,of either wild dogs and Nile crocodile in Fiaiyum. His buirel place is in Memphis,Egypt.
